Meeting Minutes

March 16, 2002

The following members were present in the Baen's Bar Chat Room.

Chair called the meeting to order at 1:02 p.m. CDT and declared a quorum.

1. Jimmy's computer
   1. Dorsett's proposal: replace videocard, check the chipset, install WinDoctor to fix registers.

      Boyes's recap of situation:

      A tech was sent a couple of months ago, after the report that Jimmy was having problems similar to Boyes's Atlas Computer. The tech found nothing wrong (with CD-RW; could not make display lock up). Lock-up is the big issue.

      Problem is video card, or chip set, or both.

      Boyes has not been able to replace his own video card.

      Boyes strongly recommends that we do what Dorsett suggests.

   2. Discussion:

      Cost? Video card about $100, Norton $39.95, chip set ?

   3. Boyes moves that Dorsett's proposal be implemented; Dorsett amends to include authorization of expense up to $300.

      Motion passed: 7 Aye, 1 Present (Treasurer cannot vote on spending issues)

   4. Who's in charge? Dorsett is closest, but will have difficulty traveling to site. Will start using e-mail. Boyes will help, using own computer and same tech.

   
   
2. Website status: Up in a few days!
   
3. Goals and Funding:
   1. Sell rest of "exploding spaceship" T-shirts?
      1. Suggestions:
         1. Post on Baen's Bar
         2. Ad on Website
         3. E-bay

         Only 2 doz left of 5 doz made. Dorsett will price remainder at $18 + $4.95 s&h, and post ad in several conferences.

      2. Dorsett will work on a new design with the ReadAssist logo, using the receipts from the earlier ones.
   2. Publicize ReadAssist on Baen's Bar?

      Ask Flint if Jim Baen will approve posting some history and the URL in FAQs, Free Library.

4. Committee reports approved.
   
5. Next meeting is set for April 20, 2002.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:50 p.m. CDT.

Gizmo Sub-Committee Report, submitted by Evan Mayerle, 14 March 2002.

No change; sub-committee is inactive at present and need not be considered in the agenda until further notice.

In my other action, a compilation of the major hardware and software in my functioning AMLI-built pc and Walt's troubled one was completed and sent to Walt, Jody, and Luis. Primary differences seem to be:

1. I'm running a faster CPU on a different motherboard, though both of us have Athlon chips.
2. My video card is a later model, from the same manufacturer, with more RAM.
3. His O/S is Win98SE, mine is Win2000.

I'll leave analysis of this information to those more familiar with the subject.
